  Sambalpuri sarees are traditional handwoven Ikat (Bandha) sarees from Odisha, where the warp and weft threads are tie-dyed before weaving. These sarees originate from Sambalpur, Balangir, Bargarh, Boudh, and Sonepur districts and are known for their exquisite craftsmanship.

  They feature culturally significant motifs like:

  • Shankha (Conch) – Symbolizing auspiciousness
  • Chakra (Wheel) – Representing time and movement
  • Phula (Flower) – A symbol of beauty and prosperity

  The saree’s red, black, and white hues symbolize Lord Jagannath's face. The Bandhakala tie-dye technique, used in these sarees, takes weeks to complete, making each piece a masterpiece of craftsmanship.

  These sarees gained national recognition when Indira Gandhi popularized them in the 1980s. To protect this heritage art, Sambalpuri silk sarees, including Berhampur Patta, have been registered under India’s Geographical Indications (GI) registry.
