Black Bangladeshi Dhakai Jamdani
Black Bangladeshi Dhakai Jamdani
Low stock: 1 left
Dramatic, luminous, and extraordinarily crafted — this Black Bangladeshi Dhakai Jamdani from Aananda Collections is a handwoven treasure from the looms of Dhaka. Deep black pure cotton, alive with the shimmer of golden, silver, and copper zari motifs woven all over the body — a tri-metallic brilliance that makes this saree unlike anything else in the Jamdani tradition.
Colour & Design: A rich, deep black pure cotton Dhakai Jamdani body forms a dramatic canvas for an extraordinary all-over zari work — golden, silver, and copper metallic threads woven individually by hand across the entire surface, each motif catching the light with a different warmth and brilliance. The interplay of gold, silver, and copper against the black ground creates a saree that shimmers with depth and complexity — warm and cool, bright and deep, all at once. The separate blouse piece features similar zari work, completing the ensemble with artisanal cohesion.
Fabric: Pure Cotton — lightweight, breathable, and exceptionally comfortable for all-day wear. Handwoven in Bangladesh using the traditional Dhakai Jamdani technique.

Saree Chronicle

Dhakai Jamdani originates from the looms of Dhaka, in present-day Bangladesh — one of the finest and most celebrated muslin traditions of the Indian subcontinent, recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013. The tradition has its roots in the legendary Dhaka muslin of the Mughal era, when the region around Dhaka produced the finest cotton fabric in the world — so sheer and light that it was described as "baft hawa" (woven wind), coveted by Mughal emperors and European traders alike. Jamdani weaving evolved from this muslin tradition, adding the discontinuous supplementary weft technique to the fine plain-weave cotton ground — a process where additional threads are individually woven into the base fabric by hand, one motif at a time. The use of zari — metallic thread — in Jamdani weaving represents a meeting of two of India's most distinguished textile traditions: the fine cotton weaving of Dhaka and the gold and silver thread work that has adorned Indian court textiles since the Mughal era. Traditionally, zari thread is made by wrapping fine gold or silver wire around a silk or cotton core; the resulting thread is then woven into the fabric using the same discontinuous weft technique as the cotton motifs, creating metallic patterns that are integral to the fabric structure rather than applied to its surface. The tri-metallic palette of this saree — golden, silver, and copper zari woven together across the black ground — is a particularly rare and luxurious expression of the zari Jamdani tradition. Each metal has its own colour temperature and reflective quality: gold is warm and celebratory, silver is cool and luminous, copper is deep and burnished — and together, against the depth of black pure cotton, they create a surface that shimmers with extraordinary complexity. This Black Bangladeshi Dhakai Jamdani is a rare meeting of Dhaka's finest handloom heritage and the ancient art of metallic thread weaving — a saree of exceptional beauty and craft.
