Black Hand Block Printed Linen Saree
Black Hand Block Printed Linen Saree
Low stock: 1 left
Graphic, bold, and quietly sophisticated — this Black Hand Block Printed Linen Saree from Aananda Collections is a celebration of one of India's oldest printing traditions on one of the world's most prized natural fabrics. Black is the most powerful ground colour in the hand block printing tradition — the colour that makes every motif stand out with maximum clarity and depth.
Colour & Design: A deep, rich black handloom linen body is adorned with a unique hand block print — each motif pressed by hand, one block at a time, onto the cool, textured linen surface. A silver border frames the saree with a quiet, contemporary shimmer that complements the graphic strength of the black ground. The slight natural variations in the block print impression — the characteristic mark of a hand-pressed block — give the saree a depth and authenticity that no machine-printed textile can replicate.
Fabric: Handloom Linen — woven from the fibres of the flax plant, naturally breathable, quick-drying, and with a characteristic cool, crisp hand that makes it ideal for warm weather and all-day wear.
Blouse: Plain linen blouse piece with silver border included in the 6.29 metres. An optional separate ready-to-wear contrast silk cotton white blouse with machine embroidery is also available — size 38", alterable to 42" — at an additional cost of ₹1,500.
Size: 6.29 metres (inclusive of blouse piece) | Width: 46 inches
Occasion: Office wear, cultural events, casual festive gatherings, art events, evening outings, and every occasion where understated, artisanal elegance makes a confident statement.
Wash Care: Dry clean only.
Pre-stitching: Available at an additional cost of ₹1,700. Please provide your waist, hip, and desired saree length measurements.
Note: Colour may slightly vary from images due to photographic lighting and monitor settings. As this is a hand block printed saree, slight variations in print placement and impression are a mark of authentic artistry.

Hand block printing is one of India's oldest and most celebrated textile traditions, with a history stretching back over 4,000 years. The technique involves carving a design into a wooden block — typically teak or sheesham wood — and then pressing the inked block onto the fabric by hand, one impression at a time, to build up a repeating pattern across the cloth. The slight variations in impression that result from hand block printing — the occasional ghost print, the subtle shift in alignment, the way the ink settles into the weave — are not imperfections but the essential character of the craft, the marks that distinguish a hand-printed textile from a machine-printed one. Black has a special significance in the hand block printing traditions of India — it is the primary ground colour of Ajrakh, one of India's most ancient and celebrated block printing traditions, practised by the Khatri community of Kutch in Gujarat and the Sindh region of Pakistan. In Ajrakh, the deep black ground is achieved through a complex resist-dyeing and block printing process involving natural dyes — indigo for blue, madder for red, and iron-rich mud for black — applied in multiple stages over several days. The black ground of Ajrakh is not merely a colour choice but a philosophical one — in the Ajrakh tradition, black represents the night sky, the cosmos, and the infinite, against which the geometric and floral motifs appear like stars. More broadly in Indian block printing, black is prized as a ground colour because it provides the maximum contrast for printed motifs, making every pattern appear with a graphic clarity and depth that lighter grounds cannot achieve. Linen — woven from the fibres of the flax plant — is one of the world's oldest natural textiles, prized for its breathability, quick-drying properties, and the slightly textured, absorbent surface that holds block print ink with a depth and clarity that smooth fabrics cannot achieve. This Black Hand Block Printed Linen Saree is a beautiful expression of India's most graphic and powerful block printing tradition — where the depth of black and the precision of the hand-pressed block create a saree of quiet, confident beauty.
