Draped in the rich weaving tradition of Ilkal, Karnataka, this Black Hazaar Buti Silk Cotton Ilkal Saree from Aananda Collections is a timeless celebration of South India's handloom heritage. A saree that carries 3,000 years of craft in its threads — bold, beautiful, and deeply rooted in the looms of northern Karnataka.

Colour & Design: A striking black body is adorned with the iconic Hazaar Buti pattern — a dense, all-over field of tiny woven motifs that give the saree its characteristic richness and visual depth. The distinctive Ilkal border and richly woven pallu complete the drape with the bold, structured elegance that is the hallmark of authentic Ilkal weaving. The coordinating blouse piece completes this elegant ensemble.

Saree Chronicle

Ilkal sarees are one of Karnataka's most celebrated handloom traditions, woven in the town of Ilkal in the Bagalkot district of northern Karnataka. The tradition is believed to be over 3,000 years old, with references to Ilkal weaving found in ancient texts and inscriptions. The sarees are woven by the Devanga and Padmasali weaver communities, who have maintained the craft across generations with remarkable fidelity to its original techniques. What makes Ilkal sarees unique among Indian handloom traditions is the Kondi technique — a distinctive joining method where the body of the saree and the pallu are woven separately on different looms and then joined together using an interlocking thread technique. This allows the pallu to be woven in a richer, more complex pattern than the body, creating the dramatic contrast between the two sections that is the hallmark of authentic Ilkal weaving. The Hazaar Buti (literally "thousand motifs") pattern — as seen on this saree — is one of Ilkal's most iconic designs: a dense, all-over field of tiny woven motifs that cover the entire body of the saree, creating a richly textured surface that catches the light with every movement. The motifs are woven using the extra-weft technique, where additional threads are interlaced into the base weave to create the raised pattern. The Ilkal border is typically woven in contrasting colours with geometric or temple motifs, and the pallu features bold stripes and woven designs in silk thread. Ilkal sarees are woven in a silk-cotton blend — the silk providing lustre and sheen, the cotton providing breathability and comfort — making them particularly well-suited to Karnataka's warm climate and the long hours of festive wear. Ilkal sarees received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2010, recognising their cultural heritage and the geographical specificity of their craft. This Black Hazaar Buti Silk Cotton Ilkal Saree is a proud expression of Karnataka's most enduring handloom legacy.
