Bold, graphic, and utterly timeless — this Black & White Hand Painted Murshidabad Silk Saree from Aananda Collections is a study in the power of contrast. Where the drama of pure black silk meets the delicacy of hand-painted white motifs, the result is a saree that is at once striking and refined — wearable art in its truest sense.

Colour & Design: Draped in deep, lustrous black pure Murshidabad silk, this saree is adorned with a fine white border and delicate hand-painted white designs near the border and pallu — each motif applied freehand by a skilled artist, making every piece uniquely its own. The off-white running blouse piece, with its thin black border and matching hand-painted design, completes the ensemble with a thoughtful, cohesive elegance. The black-and-white palette is graphic and contemporary, yet the hand-painted craft gives it a warmth and intimacy that no machine-made print can replicate.

Fabric: Pure Mulberry Silk from Murshidabad — exceptionally fine, featherlight, and easy to drape, with a natural lustre that makes the hand-painted white motifs appear luminous against the black ground.

Blouse: Off-white running blouse piece with thin black border and hand-painted design (included in the 6.09 metres).

Size: 6.09 metres approx. (inclusive of blouse piece) | Width: 46 inches

Occasion: Parties, cultural events, art gatherings, festive celebrations, office wear, and every occasion that calls for something bold, beautiful, and unmistakably unique.

Wash Care: Dry clean only.

Pre-stitching: Available at an additional cost of ₹1,700. Please provide your waist, hip, and desired saree length measurements.

Note: Colour may slightly vary from images due to photographic lighting and monitor settings. As this is a hand-painted saree, each piece is unique — slight variations in motif placement and brushwork are inherent to the craft and a mark of its authenticity.

Saree Chronicle

Murshidabad silk has its roots in the historic district of Murshidabad in West Bengal, once the seat of the Nawabs of Bengal and a thriving centre of trade and culture. The silk produced here comes from mulberry silkworms (Bombyx mori) reared on mulberry trees along the banks of the Bhagirathi river — a geography that lends the silk its distinctive fineness and natural sheen. Murshidabad silk is celebrated for being among the lightest and most supple pure silks in India, providing an ideal ground for surface embellishment. The tradition of hand-painting on silk is one of the most intimate and expressive forms of textile art. Unlike block printing or weaving, where patterns are repeated through mechanical means, hand-painting is entirely freehand: the artist applies natural or azo-free dyes directly onto the silk using fine brushes, creating motifs that are fluid, organic, and never perfectly identical. This means that every hand-painted saree is, in the truest sense, a one-of-a-kind original — a canvas that carries the artist's individual touch in every stroke. The craft demands not only technical skill but also an artistic sensibility, as the painter must account for the silk's absorbency, the flow of the dye, and the overall composition of the design. On black silk, hand-painted white motifs take on a particular luminosity — the contrast between the dark ground and the pale brushwork creates a visual depth reminiscent of ink drawings and classical monochrome art. This Black & White Hand Painted Murshidabad Silk Saree is a rare meeting of Bengal's finest silk tradition and the irreplaceable beauty of art made entirely by hand.
