Saree Chronicle

The Dolaberi saree is one of Odisha's most culturally distinctive weaving traditions, its name and design vocabulary rooted in the sacred festival of Dola Utsav — the Odishan celebration of Holi, during which the deity Lord Jagannath is placed on a decorated swing ("dola") and carried in a grand procession through the streets. The saree's most iconic motif is the dome-shaped chariot form, inspired by the magnificent rath (chariot) of Lord Jagannath that is the centrepiece of the world-famous Rath Yatra festival in Puri. These chariot motifs are woven into the pallu using the extra-weft technique, where additional threads are interlaced into the base weave to create raised, figurative patterns — a process that requires the weaver to count and control individual threads with extraordinary precision. The Ganga Jamuna border — a distinctive double-border design where two contrasting colours run in parallel along the saree's edge — is named after the sacred rivers Ganga and Yamuna, whose confluence at Prayagraj is one of Hinduism's most auspicious sites. This border technique is a hallmark of Odishan weaving and appears across several of the state's most celebrated saree traditions. Originally woven in mulberry silk, the Dolaberi tradition has been beautifully adapted in Bhagalpur Tussar — the celebrated wild silk of Bihar, produced from Antheraea mylitta moths that feed on arjun and asan trees. Bhagalpur Tussar brings its own distinctive character to the Dolaberi design: the natural slubbed texture of the silk gives the woven motifs a depth and dimensionality that smooth silks cannot achieve, while the fabric's breathable warmth makes it ideal for festive wear across seasons. This Dolaberi Tussar Silk Saree is a beautiful meeting of Odishan sacred art and Bihar's wild silk heritage — a saree that carries devotion in its threads.
