Saree Chronicle
Saree Chronicle
Jamdani is one of the finest and most celebrated handloom traditions of the Indian subcontinent, originating in the region around Dhaka (in present-day Bangladesh) and recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013. The word "Jamdani" is believed to derive from the Persian words "jam" (flower) and "dani" (vase or container), reflecting the floral motifs that are the hallmark of the tradition. Jamdani weaving is distinguished by its use of the discontinuous supplementary weft technique — a process where additional threads are individually woven into the base fabric by hand, one motif at a time, using a fine bamboo stick or needle. Unlike embroidery, where thread is applied to the surface of a finished fabric, Jamdani motifs are woven directly into the structure of the cloth, making them an integral part of the fabric itself. The dual tone effect in this saree — where purple and magenta coexist and blend across the body — is achieved through a careful dyeing process where the yarn is dyed in two complementary shades before weaving, allowing the colours to interact and shift as the fabric catches the light. This technique gives the saree a visual depth and richness that a single-colour fabric cannot achieve. Purple and magenta have deep roots in Indian festive textile tradition — purple, associated with royalty, spirituality, and the divine, and magenta, a vivid, celebratory hue that sits at the intersection of red and pink, evoking the energy of festivals, flowers, and joyful abundance. The sea green border provides a cool, unexpected contrast that anchors the warmth of the purple-magenta body — a colour combination that is bold, contemporary, and deeply festive. This Dual Tone Purple & Magenta Cotton Dhakai Jamdani Saree is a beautiful expression of how the Jamdani tradition embraces colour as a form of artistry in its own right.
