Saree Chronicle

Madhubani painting — also known as Mithila painting — is one of India's oldest and most celebrated folk art traditions, originating in the Mithila region of Bihar, along the border with Nepal. The tradition is believed to be over 2,500 years old, with references to Mithila painting found in the Ramayana, where King Janaka is said to have commissioned artists to paint the walls of his palace for the wedding of his daughter Sita to Lord Rama. For centuries, Madhubani art was practised by women on the walls and floors of their homes — a living tradition passed from mother to daughter, used to mark festivals, rites of passage, and sacred occasions. The art is characterised by its bold black outlines, intricate geometric patterns, and a rich vocabulary of motifs drawn from nature and mythology: fish (a symbol of fertility and good fortune), lotus flowers, peacocks, elephants, the sun and moon, and scenes from the lives of Krishna, Rama, and Durga. Traditionally, Madhubani artists used natural pigments derived from plants, minerals, and earth — turmeric for yellow, indigo for blue, vermillion for red, and lamp black for outlines — applied with bamboo twigs, matchsticks, or fingers. Today, azo-free synthetic dyes are also used to achieve greater colour fastness on fabric. When Madhubani painting is applied to Gachhi Tussar Silk — the finest grade of wild Tussar, with its naturally textured, absorbent surface — the pigments sink into the fabric with a depth and warmth that smooth silks cannot achieve, creating a painted surface that is both vivid and enduring. Madhubani art received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2007, recognising its cultural heritage and the geographical specificity of its tradition. This Hand Painted Madhubani on Tussar Silk Saree is a rare meeting of two of India's most ancient and expressive traditions — the wild silk of the forest and the painted stories of Mithila — woven and painted into a single, extraordinary piece.
