Madhubani painting — also known as Mithila painting — is one of India's oldest and most celebrated folk art traditions, originating in the Mithila region of Bihar. The tradition is believed to be over 2,500 years old, practised for centuries by women on the walls and floors of their homes during festivals, weddings, and sacred rituals. Within the Madhubani tradition, there are several distinct styles — the most celebrated being the Bharni style (filled with colour and figurative motifs), the Kachni style (fine line work), and the Tantric or geometric style, which is characterised by bold, symmetrical geometric patterns drawn from the sacred geometry of Tantric ritual art. The geometric Madhubani style — as seen in this saree — uses grids, diamonds, triangles, and concentric forms arranged in perfect symmetry, often incorporating the colours red, yellow, and blue, which hold deep symbolic significance: red for energy and auspiciousness, yellow for knowledge and prosperity, and blue for the divine and the infinite. These geometric patterns are not merely decorative — they are visual mandalas, rooted in the Tantric tradition of using sacred geometry as a form of meditation and spiritual protection. Traditionally, Madhubani artists used natural pigments derived from plants and minerals — turmeric for yellow, indigo for blue, vermillion for red — applied with bamboo twigs, matchsticks, or fingers. When painted on Gachhi Tussar Silk — the finest grade of wild Tussar, with its naturally textured, absorbent surface — the pigments sink into the fabric with a depth and warmth that smooth silks cannot achieve. Madhubani art received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2007. This Madhubani Painting on Tussar Silk Saree is a wearable mandala — a piece of sacred geometry carried into the world.
