Pure Silk Purple Sambalpuri Saree
Pure Silk Purple Sambalpuri Saree
Low stock: 1 left
Woven with the ancient Bandha technique of Odisha and steeped in centuries of cultural symbolism, this Pure Silk Purple Sambalpuri Saree from Aananda Collections is a masterpiece of Indian handloom heritage. Each thread is tie-dyed before it meets the loom — a process of extraordinary patience and precision that results in motifs of breathtaking clarity and depth.
Colour & Design: Draped in a rich, vibrant purple, this Khandua Patta saree features intricate Bandha (Ikat) motifs woven across the body — shankha (conch), chakra (wheel), and phula (flower) patterns that carry deep cultural and spiritual significance rooted in Odishan tradition. A striking red border and a richly detailed pallu complete the saree with a bold, celebratory contrast that is quintessentially Sambalpuri. The red running blouse piece ties the ensemble together with seamless elegance.
Fabric: Pure Silk — handwoven using the traditional Bandhakala tie-dye technique, where both warp and weft threads are resist-dyed before weaving to create the characteristic blurred-edge motifs that are the hallmark of authentic Sambalpuri weaving.
Blouse: Red running blouse piece (included in the 6.24 metres).
Size: 6.24 metres (inclusive of blouse piece) | Width: 46 inches
Occasion: Weddings, festive celebrations, cultural events, pujas, and all occasions that call for the grandeur of authentic Indian handloom.
Wash Care: Dry clean only.
Pre-stitching: Available at an additional cost of ₹1,700. Please provide your waist, hip, and desired saree length measurements.

Saree Chronicle
Saree Chronicle
Sambalpuri sarees are among the most celebrated handwoven textiles of India, originating from the western districts of Odisha — Sambalpur, Balangir, Bargarh, Boudh, and Sonepur — where the art of Bandha (Ikat) weaving has been practised for centuries. What makes Sambalpuri weaving extraordinary is its technique: both the warp and weft threads are tie-dyed ("resist-dyed") before they are placed on the loom, a process known as Bandhakala. The dyer carefully binds sections of the thread with tight knots to resist the dye, creating a pre-planned pattern that will only reveal itself fully once the threads are woven together. This process — which can take weeks for a single saree — requires the weaver to visualise the finished design in reverse, working with extraordinary precision to ensure that the dyed threads align perfectly on the loom to form the intended motifs. The result is the characteristic "bleeding edge" or soft-focus outline that distinguishes authentic Ikat from printed imitations. Sambalpuri motifs are deeply rooted in Odishan culture and spirituality: the shankha (conch) symbolises auspiciousness, the chakra (wheel) represents time and the cosmic order, and the phula (flower) evokes beauty and prosperity. The traditional colour palette — red, black, and white — is said to represent the face of Lord Jagannath, the presiding deity of Odisha. Sambalpuri sarees gained national prominence when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi wore and popularised them in the 1980s. Today, they are protected under India's Geographical Indications (GI) registry, recognising their cultural heritage and geographical authenticity as one of India's most treasured handloom traditions.
