Red Hand-Painted Pattachitra Linen Saree
Red Hand-Painted Pattachitra Linen Saree
Low stock: 1 left
From the sacred looms and brushes of Raghurajpur in Odisha comes this Red Hand-Painted Pattachitra Linen Saree from Aananda Collections — a wearable painting of extraordinary devotion and beauty. Red is the most sacred ground colour in the Pattachitra tradition, the colour of the temple, of the divine, and of the eternal love story of Radha and Krishna that unfolds across this pure linen canvas.
Colour & Design: A rich, deep red pure linen body forms a sacred, luminous canvas for exquisite hand-painted Pattachitra artwork depicting scenes from the Radha Krishna story — each figure rendered in the characteristic bold outlines, vivid flat colour fills, and intricate floral borders that define authentic Pattachitra art. The multicolour painted scenes glow against the red ground with a warmth and intensity that is deeply resonant with the colour vocabulary of Odishan temple art. Every motif is painted entirely by hand by a Pattachitra artist from Raghurajpur, making each saree a unique, one-of-a-kind original.
Fabric: Pure Linen — woven from the fibres of the flax plant, breathable, naturally textured, and with a characteristic cool, crisp hand. Its slightly absorbent surface holds the natural Pattachitra pigments with depth and clarity.
Blouse: Blouse piece included in the 6.29 metres.
Size: 6.29 metres (inclusive of blouse piece) | Width: 46 inches
Occasion: Festivals, cultural events, art gatherings, pujas, special occasions, and gifting — for the collector who wears their love of Indian sacred art as naturally as they wear their saree.
Styling Note: Pairs beautifully with oxidised silver jewellery for a timeless ethnic look that honours the saree's artistic and spiritual heritage.
Wash Care: Dry clean only.
Pre-stitching: Available at an additional cost of ₹1,700. Please provide your waist, hip, and desired saree length measurements.
Note: Colour may slightly vary from images due to photographic lighting and monitor settings. Each saree is hand-painted — no two pieces are identical, and slight variations in motif placement and colour are a mark of authentic artistry.

Saree Chronicle
Saree Chronicle
Pattachitra is one of India's oldest and most celebrated folk art traditions, originating in the state of Odisha and practised for over a thousand years. The word "Pattachitra" derives from the Sanskrit words "patta" (cloth) and "chitra" (picture) — literally, a picture on cloth. The tradition is centred in the village of Raghurajpur in the Puri district of Odisha, designated a Heritage Crafts Village by the Government of India, where the craft is passed from parent to child across generations in over a hundred artist families. Red is the most sacred and significant ground colour in the Pattachitra tradition — it is the colour of hingula (cinnabar), one of the primary natural pigments used by Pattachitra artists for millennia, and the colour most closely associated with the sacred art of the Jagannath temple in Puri, where Pattachitra originated as a form of devotional painting created for the deity. In Odishan temple culture, red is the colour of the divine feminine, of auspiciousness, and of the sacred fire of devotion — and on the red ground of a Pattachitra painting, the figures of Radha and Krishna appear with a warmth and intensity that no other colour can achieve. The Radha Krishna narrative — the central subject of this saree — is one of the most beloved themes in Indian devotional art, drawn from the Bhagavata Purana and the Gita Govinda of the 12th-century Odishan poet Jayadeva. In Pattachitra, the story is told through a series of scenes rendered in the characteristic style of the tradition: bold black outlines, flat areas of vivid colour, stylised figures with elongated eyes and graceful postures, and intricate floral borders that frame each composition like the carved borders of an Odishan temple. Pattachitra artists traditionally prepare their own natural pigments from minerals, plants, and earth, and apply them using fine brushes made from the hair of domestic animals. Linen — woven from the fibres of the flax plant — provides an ideal canvas for Pattachitra painting, its slightly textured, absorbent surface holding the natural pigments with a depth and clarity that smooth fabrics cannot achieve. This Red Hand-Painted Pattachitra Linen Saree is a rare and irreplaceable work of devotional art — a piece of living heritage from the hands of Raghurajpur's master artists, carrying the sacred colour of the Jagannath temple in every brushstroke.
