Jamdani is one of the finest and most celebrated handloom traditions of the Indian subcontinent, originating in the region around Dhaka (in present-day Bangladesh) and recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013. The word "Jamdani" is believed to derive from the Persian words "jam" (flower) and "dani" (vase or container), reflecting the floral motifs that are the hallmark of the tradition. Jamdani weaving is distinguished by its use of the discontinuous supplementary weft technique — a process where additional threads are individually woven into the base fabric by hand, one motif at a time, using a fine bamboo stick or needle. Unlike embroidery, where thread is applied to the surface of a finished fabric, Jamdani motifs are woven directly into the structure of the cloth, making them an integral part of the fabric itself. The white and red-maroon colour combination holds a place of extraordinary significance in Bengali cultural tradition — it is the palette of the shankha-pola (the white conch shell and red coral bangles worn by Bengali married women), of the sindoor that marks the parting of a bride's hair, and of the iconic lal-paar sari (white saree with red border) that is the traditional dress of the Bengali woman at festivals, pujas, and sacred occasions. This palette is so deeply embedded in Bengali identity that it appears across the most important moments of a woman's life — from her wedding day to the annual celebration of Durga Puja, when Bengali women across the world dress in white and red as an act of cultural devotion. The addition of green floral motifs in the Jamdani weave of this saree introduces a note of natural freshness — green, the colour of new growth and the sacred tulsi plant, has long been paired with white and red in Bengali festive art and textile tradition. This White & Maroon Cotton Dhakai Jamdani Saree is a beautiful expression of how the Jamdani tradition carries the deepest colours of Bengali cultural identity in its threads.
