Saree Chronicle
Saree Chronicle
Kantha is one of the oldest and most beloved embroidery traditions of the Indian subcontinent, originating in the eastern regions of India — particularly West Bengal, Odisha, and Tripura — as well as Bangladesh. The word "kantha" is derived from the Sanskrit "kontha," meaning throat or rags, reflecting the craft's humble origins: women would layer old saris and dhotis together and stitch them with a simple running stitch to create quilts, wraps, and covers for everyday use. What began as an act of resourcefulness became an art form of extraordinary beauty. The Kantha running stitch — a deceptively simple back-and-forth needle movement — is used to create intricate motifs drawn from nature, mythology, and daily life: lotus flowers, fish, birds, the tree of life, and the iconic kairi (paisley). On silk, Kantha embroidery takes on a new dimension — the contrast between the smooth, lustrous ground fabric and the textured, hand-stitched surface creates a visual depth that is impossible to replicate by machine. Each Kantha saree is entirely hand-embroidered, often taking weeks or months to complete, making it not just a garment but a record of a craftsperson's time, patience, and vision. Recognised as a Geographical Indication (GI) craft, Kantha embroidery is today celebrated globally as one of India's most expressive and enduring textile arts.
