Saree Chronicle

Kantha is one of the oldest and most beloved embroidery traditions of the Indian subcontinent, originating in the eastern regions of India — particularly West Bengal, Odisha, and Tripura. The word "kantha" is derived from the Sanskrit "kontha," meaning throat or rags, reflecting the craft's humble origins: women would layer old saris and dhotis together and stitch them with a simple running stitch to create quilts and wraps for everyday use. What began as an act of resourcefulness became an art form of extraordinary beauty. The Kantha running stitch — a deceptively simple back-and-forth needle movement — is used to create intricate motifs drawn from nature, mythology, and daily life: lotus flowers, fish, birds, the tree of life, and the iconic buta (floral spray). Tussar silk, the ground fabric of this saree, is one of India's most treasured wild silks — produced from wild silk moths that feed on the leaves of arjun, asan, and sal trees in the forests of Jharkhand, Bihar, and West Bengal. Its natural golden-beige colour, distinctive textured weave, and breathable warmth make it an ideal canvas for Kantha embroidery — the slightly rough surface of Tussar holds the thread beautifully, giving the stitches a depth and definition that smooth silks cannot achieve. Half Tussar — a blend of Tussar silk and cotton — combines the natural character of Tussar with the softness and comfort of cotton, making it particularly well-suited for everyday festive wear. The sky blue Kantha work on the pallu and border of this saree creates a vivid, joyful contrast against the natural Tussar body — a colour combination that is deeply rooted in Bengal's artistic sensibility, where the earthiness of natural fibres meets the vibrancy of hand-applied colour.
