Saree Chronicle

Mul Silk — also known as Mulmul Silk — is a fine, lightweight fabric with a heritage rooted in the Indian subcontinent's long tradition of weaving gossamer-thin textiles. The word "mul" or "mulmul" is derived from the Persian "malmal," referring to the finest grades of muslin and lightweight woven cloth. In its silk form, Mul Silk is celebrated for its extraordinary softness, breathability, and fluid drape — qualities that make it one of the most comfortable silk fabrics to wear across seasons, particularly in India's warm climate. The fabric's open weave structure allows air to circulate freely, while its natural silk sheen gives it an elegance that belies its lightness. Digital printing on silk is a contemporary craft that has transformed the possibilities of textile design — allowing artists and designers to translate complex, multi-tonal artwork directly onto fabric with a precision and colour depth that traditional block printing or screen printing cannot achieve. The watercolour-effect digital print on this saree captures the fluid, spontaneous quality of watercolour painting — where pigments blend and bleed into one another organically — and renders it permanently onto the silk surface. Gota Patti, the traditional Rajasthani craft of applying narrow strips of real or imitation gold and silver ribbon to fabric, adds a layer of handcrafted heritage to this contemporary piece — a shimmering border that connects the saree's modern digital artistry to India's centuries-old tradition of embellishing textiles with precious metals. This Mul Silk Saree in Multi Colour Digital Print, curated by Aananda, is a beautiful meeting point of ancient fabric tradition, contemporary digital art, and the enduring Indian love of adornment.
