Saree Chronicle

Gachhi Tussar is one of India's most treasured wild silks, woven primarily in the eastern states of Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha — regions where the forests are home to the wild silk moths that produce this extraordinary fibre. Unlike cultivated mulberry silk, which is produced by silkworms reared on controlled diets of mulberry leaves, Tussar silk comes from wild moths of the Antheraea genus — most notably Antheraea mylitta — that feed on the leaves of arjun, asan, and sal trees in their natural forest habitat. This wild origin gives Tussar its defining characteristics: a coarser, more textured weave than cultivated silk, a natural golden-beige colour that cannot be fully replicated by dyeing, and a breathability and warmth that make it uniquely comfortable across seasons. "Gachhi" Tussar refers specifically to the finest grade of Tussar silk — yarn reeled from the best quality cocoons, resulting in a fabric of exceptional smoothness and lustre relative to other Tussar varieties. Tussar silk has been woven in India for over two thousand years and holds deep cultural significance in eastern India, where it is traditionally worn for auspicious occasions, pujas, and festivals. The fabric is also celebrated for its sustainability credentials — wild silk production supports forest ecosystems and tribal weaving communities across Jharkhand and Bihar, making Gachhi Tussar not just a luxury fabric but a conscious, heritage-rooted choice. This Red & Beige Pure Gachhi Tussar Saree, with its natural virgin body and vibrant red border, is a beautiful expression of India's wild silk legacy.
