The 1-metre running blouse piece features a golden scalloping border, completing the ensemble with a refined finishing touch.

Saree Chronicle
Saree Chronicle
Katan silk is the most exalted form of Banarasi silk, woven in the sacred city of Varanasi using tightly twisted raw silk threads — "katan" referring to the very twist that gives this fabric its signature crispness, smooth surface, and extraordinary lustre. Unlike other silks, Katan becomes more supple and radiant with age, making it one of the few fabrics that truly qualifies as an heirloom. The tradition of embroidering Katan silk with zari — threads of real gold or silver wrapped around a silk or cotton core — dates back to the Mughal era, when Banarasi weavers were commissioned by the imperial court to create fabrics of unparalleled opulence. Water gold zari, used in this saree, is a refined variation that captures a softer, more fluid shimmer — evoking the play of light on still water. The cut-work floral embroidery technique adds yet another layer of artisanship, where skilled craftsmen carefully remove threads from the woven base to create delicate, lace-like motifs that seem to float on the silk. This Royal Blue Designer Katan Silk Saree, curated by Aananda, brings together these centuries-old techniques in a contemporary design — a piece where Varanasi's weaving legacy meets the vision of modern Indian luxury.
