Saree Chronicle

Jamdani is one of the finest and most celebrated handloom traditions of the Indian subcontinent, originating in the region around Dhaka (in present-day Bangladesh) and recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013. The word "Jamdani" is believed to derive from the Persian words "jam" (flower) and "dani" (vase or container), reflecting the floral and geometric motifs that are the hallmark of the tradition. Jamdani weaving is distinguished by its use of the discontinuous supplementary weft technique — a process where additional threads are individually woven into the base fabric by hand, one motif at a time, creating patterns that are integral to the fabric structure rather than applied to its surface. The Dhakai Jamdani tradition encompasses a wide spectrum of fabrics — from the extraordinarily fine, fully handwoven sarees that can take weeks or months to complete, to the soft, accessible Jamdanis woven on jacquard-assisted looms that bring the beauty of the tradition's motifs into everyday wear. The jacquard method, which uses a mechanical system of punched cards to control individual warp threads, allows complex Jamdani-style patterns to be woven in a fraction of the time of fully handwoven pieces — making the aesthetic of the tradition accessible to a much wider range of wearers without sacrificing the essential character of the Jamdani design vocabulary. Sky blue — the colour of open sky, of clear water, and of the vast Bengal horizon — has a particular resonance in Indian textile and cultural tradition. It is associated with the divine blue of Lord Krishna, with the expansiveness of the natural world, and with a sense of lightness and freedom that makes it one of the most universally beloved colours in Indian festive wear. On the soft weave of Dhakai Jamdani, sky blue takes on a luminous, airy quality, the multicolour butas appearing to float across the surface like flowers scattered on water. This Sky Blue Soft Dhakai Jamdani Saree is a beautiful, accessible expression of the Jamdani tradition — light in colour, light in weight, and light in spirit.
